Last February at QuiltCon 2016, I had the pleasure of taking a class with Libs Elliot on Hexies, Triangles, and Y-Seams. I purchased a Hex-N-More ruler specifically for the Weight of Love … but I haven’t had much of a chance to use it since.
For some reason, though, the ruler popped out at me when I sat down to design a quilt for an on-his-way-baby-boy and his SF-Giants-loving-parents, and before I knew it, 7th Inning Snooze was born!
The quilt features rows and rows of half-hexies in alternating dark and medium greys from Jen Kingwell’s Behind the Scenes line for Moda Fabrics. To add a little bit of visual interest, I added a few hexies pieced from triangles and added a little orange solid from my trusty Mario palette. I love how the solid borders make the light hexies appear as if they’re floating over the darker background!
After finishing some very large projects this summer, I was so very pleasantly surprised at how quickly this little guy came together! The way the half-hexies are cut (either using the ruler or the paper template included with the pattern) make the units so easy to line up and stitch. Plus, with a little directional pressing, all the seams nest together so beautifully that I almost didn’t even need to use pins to put the rows together!!
The quilt finished right 40″ x 46″, so it was really manageable to do the quilting myself on my domestic machine. My free-motion swirls tend to get really tight and dense, so to keep things simple, I just opted for some straight lines echoing the hexi edges. We stopped by our local ball park for a little impromptu photo shoot before sending it off to its new little family.
If you’d like to make your own version of our 7th Inning Snooze quilt, the digital pattern is now available for immediate download in our craftsy shop.
The pattern includes instructions for piecing three different sizes, and while we highly recommend using the Hex-N-More ruler – available here – paper templates are included, also.
We currently have a very limited number of kits in stock – and they come with a wide variety of feature prints … not just orange. And, to celebrate the pattern’s release, while supplies last, we’ll include a FREE Hex-N-More ruler with your 7IS kit purchase.
A huge thank you goes out to Barb, Cara, and Jen, for pumping out their test projects in a ridiculously short amount of time! Your feedback is so incredibly valuable to me and I’ve loved seeing your projects come together. It is so much fun to see the different lives a pattern can take on just by switching up the fabric!
