What I wasn’t able to share at the time, was that this block would also be featured in a full quilt pattern in this fall’s Quilts from Quiltmaker’s 100 Blocks.
Introducing … A Gaggle of Geese!
The Prairie Dawn block started out as a sketch from my digital design class. The assignment was to create a shape that conveyed movement and my inspiration was a flock of birds flying around.
I later took my sketches home and tried to create a quilt the conveyed the same sense of movement. This one gave me quite a bit of trouble, and I went through over fifty different layouts and color schemes before I was happy with the final design.
I hardly ever save my “in-between” quilt mock-ups, but since this one came together over the course of a couple of weeks, I thought it would be fun to share the evolution of the final project.
The fabric line used in my mock-up is Tucker Prairie by 1Canoe2, but the actual quilt, itself, was made using Sundrops by Corey Yoder. Thanks to my fabulous editor at Quiltmaker, I had the chance to work with this yummy line before it even made its debut at Quilt Market – it was too much fun to be in on a little industry insider information for a few weeks!
The quilt finishes up at 77″ x 77″, and while it looks delightfully complex, it is simply made with just three different. Those partial blocks along the edges are pieced with the same building blocks as the full blocks in the body of the quilt and then just trimmed down to the correct size before quilting. It’s so much easier to do it that way than having to cut a dozen different partial triangles and deal with piecing units with bias edges!!!
I’m happy to announce that we will have quilt kits available for sale in both of the featured color palettes during the first week of December. Please see below for ordering information.
Quilts from Quiltmaker’s 100 Blocks is currently on the shelves and is also available as a digital download directly from Quiltmaker’s website. There are so many cute projects in this fall’s edition … there just aren’t enough sewing hours in the day!!!
If you are interested in purchasing a Gaggle of Geese quilt kit, either in the Tucker Prairie or Sundrops colorways, please contact us for more information on how to reserve your set. Kits will ship the first week in December.
