Week 03 Agenda:
- Block 3
- Steps 14 – 15
- Strip-Pieced Block 2, if you didn’t finish these already
- Blocks 13 + 14
We are continuing on with more of our basic building blocks this week! You’ll remember this week’s first block (#13 – Full Size or #3 – Mini) from last week. It’s the same block, just with a different coloring!
This week’s second block is what I’m calling a Fancy HST – it’s your basic HST with a tiny square set in one corner. You achieve that set-in block by attaching an I triangle to the left side of a Block 2 (or step 14 – Mini), and then trimming down the excess so that you’re left with a nice right-angled unit.
Please note – Block #13 is supposed to finish at 3.5″ square, so you are supposed to have that little 3/8th inch notch on the edge … see photo below. The notch will disappear when you attach the remaining triangle.
Some Tips for the week …
- Sew carefully and precisely – you’ll be setting your future self up for success as we start putting these smaller building blocks together into larger building blocks!
- Press carefully – while I chose to press Block 13 (Block 3 – Mini) open … my Block 14 (step 15 – mini) behaved better when I pressed the seams towards the triangle. You are the boss of your own quilt … so press however your fabric and your intuition tells you to. Yes, not all your seams will nest or be pressed open … but that is ok!!
- Try using the Easy Angle ruler or a similar ruler to trim your blocks down to size. It really helps me make sure that I’m staying on-track, size-wise.
That’s it for this week – see you next week with some more building blocks!
