Block #2 in the Super Mario QAL is Yoshi! He’s a double-wide border block … and don’t tell the other blocks, but I think he’s my absolute favorite … even in light of those 648 – 1″ blocks!
Some helpful hints for this month’s block:
- It might be tempting with all those big blocks of colors to use larger squares. I tried it with one portion of my yoshi block, and while it saved me a little bit of time cutting, my nice crisp folds along my seam lines were non-existent. I spent more time trying to fix them and still ended up with some super wonky seams. From now on, I’m sticking with those millions of 1 ½” squares!
- Cutting went so much faster once I dug my June Taylor Shape Cut ruler out of a box in the garage. They aren’t sponsoring the Mario Quilt Along, but they provided some awesome prizes for our Aspen Glow Quilt Along. I’m not receiving any sort of compensation for this, but let me tell you I love, love, LOVE this ruler! I use it all the time with almost every single one of my projects – it just makes life so much easier!! Plus, being able to count my squares by multiples save so much time!
- I also found my sewing machine’s ¼” quilting foot with a guide. I rarely use it since it doesn’t work well with pinned blocks, but since this project just requires sewing along a folded edge, it worked like a dream. Plus, the guiding edge made from some very precise seams at quick speeds!!
If you have any tips or tricks, we’d love to hear them! Also, be sure to share your fabulous blocks our flick group. For more video-game-quilty-goodness, check out our 2015 Zelda Quilt Along! More details here. Happy sewing!
